Sean Burton ~ Bel Canto Conductor

Dr. Sean M. Burton is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, where he conducts the Briar Cliff Singers and Chamber Choir, teaches courses in conducting and choral methods, and advises the Cliff Hangers, Briar Cliff’s student-led a cappella group.  In his second season as Conductor of the Nebraska Children’s Chorus Bel Canto, under Dr. Burton’s leadership Bel Canto has performed throughout Nebraska, Iowa, and Europe; been selected for performance at state and national conferences of MENC; released a live recording entitled Reflections; and will tour Mexico in June of 2008.  A long-time faculty member of New England Music Camp in Sidney, Maine he is also the Chancel Choir Director at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa.

Dr. Burton has worked with vocal and instrumental ensembles at every level from elementary school through university, as well as with church, community and professional choirs and orchestras, ranging in genres from Broadway and jazz to opera and oratorio.  His previous experience includes appointments with the Boston Orpheus Ensemble, Boston University Choral Society, Connecticut Concert Opera, Connecticut Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and Metropolitan Opera Guild.  He is formerly the Choral and Orchestra Director at Weston High School, in Connecticut, where his choirs and orchestra consistently received superior ratings at competitive festivals.  He has conducted choral-orchestral works with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and Omaha Area Youth Orchestra and prepared choruses for the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and Omaha Symphony.

Active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. Burton appears at summer programs, with honor choirs, and at festivals throughout the U.S.  He has published more than twenty articles in a variety of periodicals, most notably the Choral Journal, and his editions and arrangements of choral music are published by Colla Voce Music, Inc.

Dr. Burton earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; the Master of Music degree in Conducting at Boston University; and the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education (summa cum laude) at The Hartt School – University of Hartford.
